ABOUT ABOUT

Robert Crawford – Testament and T.S. Eliot

Join fellow alumni, family and friends of the University of St Andrews in the Rare Book Room at The Strand Bookstore to hear Robert Crawford, Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the British Academy, and Professor in the School of English at the University of St Andrews. Professor Crawford will read from Testament, his most recent collection of poetry, and launch the American edition of his highly praised biography of T.S. Eliot, Young Eliot – From St Louis to ‘The Waste Land’.

Managed by St Andrews graduate Carson Moss (Class of 2001), The Strand Bookstore is New York City’s legendary home of 18 miles of new, used, and rare books, and the perfect location to hear Professor Crawford discuss some of the challenges he faced in writing about the man many see as the twentieth century’s greatest poet.

Your evening will begin with a reception featuring passed & table hors d’oeuvres with wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages. In addition there will be a special Glenmorangie whisky tasting station, hosted by St Andrews graduate David Blackmore (Class of 1998), master brand ambassador at the Glenmorangie Company, as well as a silent auction.

Following the reading and book signing, there will be an intimate dinner with Professor Crawford at Union Square Café, one of America’s most acclaimed and popular restaurants, founded by famous restaurateur Danny Meyer. Please note that spaces are extremely limited, so book early to secure your place.

Funds from this event will support a Lectureship in American Literature at the University of St Andrews, and are payable to the University of St Andrews American Foundation, 501(c)(3).

Born in Lanarkshire, Robert Crawford studied and taught at Glasgow and Oxford, moving to St Andrews in 1989. He has published six collections of poetry and over two dozen other books. An experienced broadcaster, he has been a judge of the National Poetry Competition, the T S Eliot Prize, and the David Cohen Prize.
