ABOUT ABOUT

Lights, Camera, Action: Optics for Life

Light is astounding and can enable major breakthroughs for the quality of life. This talk will describe some of the new uses of light for studies in healthcare, neuroscience and sensing. Applications including advanced imaging can help clinics make early diagnosis of kidney disease, and observing details of the brain in living organisms to help neuroscientists ultimately unravel the workings of the Human Brain. Finally I will describe how light can even authenticate whisky - you want to be sure what you are drinking!

Please join us for an intriguing discussion with Professor Kishan Dholakia, Professor in the School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of St Andrews. This event is generously hosted by Christy Thomas & Chris Loxton.

Kishan Dholakia is head of the Optical Manipulation Group at the University of St Andrews. He works on a  wide range of topics including advanced imaging, beam shaping and optical manipulation. He has published over 275 papers and accrued over 16,000 lifetime citations, as well as securing over £20M of research funding and developing several light-based technologies that have made worldwide sales in over fifteen countries. His group won the European Optics Prize in 2003 and he received a Royal Society (London) Wolfson Merit Award in 2008. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, SPIE and the Optical Society of America.
